Preliminary Task
During the AS Media year we were asked to create our own preliminary task where we had to include an example of the following three concepts, continuity editing, shot-reverse-shot and the 180 degree rule.
The first concept we had to include was continuity editing, continuity editing is the match on action shot which is cutting between two shots that shows that no time has passed between them and give the audience the feeling that it is continuing from the first shot. In our preliminary task we used continuity editing when Janith opened the door to enter the room where Gavin was and then we recorded Janith when he had actually entered the room to make it seem like it was continuous and i feel like it worked.
The next concept we had to use in our preliminary task was the shot-reverse-shot. Shot-reverse-shot is when two characters are in an event together and the shot shows the character looking somewhere and the audience would imagine the other character being there without them even being shown, a shot-reverse-shot is suitable when a character is speaking so that the audience can actually see who is speaking. An example of where we used a shot-reverse-shot in our preliminary task is when Janith and Gavin were talking to eachother when Gavin is tied to the chair and we see a close up shot of Janith talking and it gave the audience the feeling that he was talking to Gavin even though we dont see Gavin in the shot.
Finally we used the 180 degree rule, this is the idea of there being an imaginary line drawn down the middle of the room. This is to make sure that all the shots in the film are being recorded from the same side of the line. But if the line is crossed, the characters involved in the film will be seen in a different way and it may confusing for the audience viewing the film. We used the 180 degree rule when Gavin and Janith were having a conversation with each other and we made sure that they were being filmed from the same side of the line throughout the whole film.
Our Preliminary Task
Thriller Opening
To conclude we are relatively happy with the final version of our thriller opening. We feel that some of the features of our thriller opening are similar to some openings from other thriller films, for example the location of our thriller opening was an abandoned garage that was very dark and creepy, the location added to the suspense of the thriller opening and the majority of other thriler openings are located in some kind of scary location so that the audience experiences more suspense and i feel that our location was very good at doing that.
We also used dark lighting during our thriller opening as it also helped to add more suspense to the film, if we were to use brighter lighting it wouldn't give the same effect on the experience for the auidience and therefore dark lighting was suitable as it added to the suspense. Many thriller openings use dark lighting as it is an easy and great way to make the opening more frightening for the audience, and i think that us using dark lighting worked very well.
Our production and distribution logos were created by ourselfs on various programs. We were inspired by a few other distribution and production companies. For example Warner Bros, Pixar etc.
Throughout the whole of our thriller opening there was background music which again was added to help add more suspense. The music we chose sounded like it was building up to something big which was meant to leave the audience on the edge of their seats and make the experience for the audience much more eventful.
